The Playwrights Retreat

the playwrights retreat

Thursday 3rd - Monday 7th May 2018

Spend a long weekend in the Spring discovering how site shapes story by exploring the enchanting, otherworldly settings of French village L’Isle Jourdain, in the heart of the Nouvelle Aquitaine . Led by UK playwright Natalie Beech, this weekend is designed to guide you through the process of creating a script for live performance, in a non-traditional setting.

Open to writers of all experiences, this weekend will give playwrights the tools and inspiration to come up with new ideas, taking them from fruition to completion in just three days.

Consider site and non-traditional performance spaces through trips to historic churches, outdoor theatres and natural locations in the surrounding Vienne region. Explore different techniques, styles and formats and find how best to bring your story to life in unusual settings.

Perfect for those looking to learn more about scriptwriting, find new inspiration, or who are struggling to develop their ideas beyond the first stages. By the end of the weekend, you will have a short play ready to be staged by actors and directors in a non-traditional performance space.

  • Create and develop characters from scratch that are believable, complex and engaging.
  • Learn about the importance of voice and perspective in playwriting through live readings and feedback sessions.
  • Improve your storytelling skills with workshops in structure and dramatization.
  • Receive one-on-one advice and support from a professional playwright throughout the weekend.
  • Experience working with a director and receiving feedback from performers.
  • See your work brought to life in front of a live audience in a non-traditional performance space.

Mornings will begin with a breakfast of hot pastries or pancakes, followed by yoga to set you up for the day.

Meals are provided throughout the day by Maison Salvadore. You won’t find a television in your room, but a curated selection of classic literature, magazines, artwork and handpicked curio. Experience our homemade cosmetics made with natural ingredients, time in nature and the dynamic of solitude within a group. .

Natalie is writer of recent play Collegiate, which went on to critical acclaim and sold-out runs this past year. As Associate Playwright and Producer for theatre company Written Foundations, she runs workshops and creates issue-based drama for educational institutions alongside director Brigitte Adela. She has won several playwriting competitions, with work staged at theatres including Arcola, Attenborough Arts Centre and The Bread & Roses.
